I think Louis Armstrong was the first black man I ever saw.  Sure, it was on television, but still memorable.  It had to be in about 1956 or '57.  The sight of him intrigued me and I was transfixed staring at the tube.  I have to admit that at first I was interested in his color, then in the size he cheeks grew to as he blew his trumpet, and the dramatic fashion with which he wiped his face with his handkerchief.  As he went on, it was the size of his smile and the sheer joy he communicated that completely won me over.  He was my introduction to music in general and the blues and jazz in particular.   "What a Wonderful World" still sends chills down my spine on a glorious Spring day.  I got lots of odd looks driving down Santa Monica Boulevard with the top of my Jeep down and Louis belting out "Hello Dolly" from the stereo.
