Before I had kids, I'd see EVERY one of the Best Picture nominees before the Oscars are handed out.  Post-kids; well....I've seen one.  Django Unchained.  If Tarantino hadn't made Inglorious Basterds I probably wouldn't have expected as much from Django, but still, it was a good one.  REAL long.  Waiting for it on rental isn't the worst idea.  Your bladder will thank you.  Leo DiCrapio is a stone-cold creep.

Saw This is 40 with my wife the other night, too.  Pretty funny flick, but no plot that I could discern.  Make sure to stay about 30 seconds into the credits to see Melissa McCarthy go off in a deleted scene.  It makes the movie.

On video, I saw Star Wars with my kid for his first time.  I guess having kids can make movies even better!

I almost suggested that you start this thread after the music thread started.  How about throwing out a list of movies from the last couple of years that one should rent if they missed them at the theatre.  I'm all about Netflix online straight to the tv now.  It would take a hell of a lot to get me to a theatre.  Among those In my Queue:  Charlie Bartlett, Waitress, City of God, Inglorious, Valkyrie, Flyboys, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

If you've got Netflix online, I recommend the British television series Sherlock.  Very well written and acted.

Absolutely.  Just got a smart blu ray for Xmas, we stream documentaries all the time.  For some reason, I'm a nut for the netflix docs.

As for your list, here's my take:

Charlie Bartlett: Never saw it.

Waitress: Good little indie flick.  Sad that the director was murdered in real life.

City of God: EPIC foreign film.  You will not be disappointed.

Inglorious: AS I said above, amazing

Valkyrie: I hate Tom Cruise and anything he stars in, but found this extremely watchable.  Solid movie.

Flyboys: Was not a fan.  WWI from a Disney perspective, IMO

Casino Royale: Best bond in years; apparently Skyfall surpasses it which means Skyfall has to be amazing

Quantum: Everyone says this one sucks, but I thought it was entertaining.  Not as good as Casino, but worth keeping in the queue.

In my queue I have 2 seasons of Justified, and the movie Attack the Block.

Great rentals right now include Ted, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, The Island President (so I've heard), Prometheus and The Campaign.

Just saw Dark Knight Rises and think it was the best of the Batman movies.  Bane is a scary dude.  Was great in surround sound as well.

My wife and I went to the Batman movie marathon when The Dark Knight Rises came out. It was 9 straight hours of the three Btman movies. It was awesome.

Watched Flight with Denzel Washington recently. Not what I expected but a good drama. The plane crash scene was intense. It was good and Denzel acted the mess out of it.

I watched The Station Agent tonight.  2003 Indie flick.  Good flick despite being about nothing.  It pretty fully explores some odd personalities tossed together by circumstance.  Very good acting.  I also saw MI: The Ghost Protocol.  Entertaining in the way any Mission Impossible flick is.  Lots of explosions so fun to play with the surround sound system.

Skyfall: Got away on Saturday and saw it in the theater.  First class flick.  Action scenes are awesome, precisely because they avoid all the jittery camera bullshit.

Killer Joe on DVD.  That is a weird, weird movie, but I've never seen Matthew McConaghey have more fun.  Not for everyone.

thought casino and skyfall were amazing. quantum wasn't bad at all, i agree. the biggest thing going for it is that it's a crisp 90 minutes, unlike casino and skyfall. casino and skyfall deserved 2.5 hours, but quantum didn't and to their credit they didn't try to stretch it out.

last movie i saw......... the hobbit? i think? if you liked the original trilogy, you'll like this one.

i still like the dark knight and begins over rises. i don't know if there's a 5 hour extended edition blu-ray in our future or what, but there were plenty of unexplained leaps in rises that just didn't sit right with me. i thought begins and dark knight were comic book nerd nirvana, rises was a very good movie but avengers was the top comic movie of 2012, imo.

I was in a chaotic room full of kids and extended family when I rented Avengers, and it looked like a shitload of fun.  I need to give it a second viewing.

Plan on watching End of Watch on demand.  Heard it was good, but had a lot of handheld photography.  Sometimes that can get on my nerves.

I saw Hansel and Gretel and its pointless, but I'm a sucker for most movies set a couple hundred years prior. Will never see it again. About the only thing I can say is that it is better than Brothers Grimm. Haha

Most people would say I have trendy mind numbing taste in movies and they are probably right. I just go to be entertained. I rarely watch a movie twice though.

What was the last movie you watched that you had already watched before? Mine was I, Robot. I hope they make a sequel to that one day. Would be cool in 3-d.

I have to have some story to go with the visuals and sound and special effects. I can't enjoy mindless movies. But if they're acted well (also important) and they have a good story, I like them. Minority Report, Fifth Element. The first two The Matrix (matrices?). Those are some of my rewatch list movies.

I heard it's supposedly set 100 years ago, but filled with modern anachronisms.  Rottentomatoes gave it a shit rating.  Wouldn't spend $1 on it.

this marks the first time, literally ever, that someone has said they enjoyed any matrix movie beyond the first.

Molerat's got some interesting movie taste.  He is incredibly rational and sensible in all threads up til now.  I KNEW there had to be a catch.
