Pac-12 eSports

PAC MAN

Recommended Posts

Did a quick search on this forum to see if there was an eSports thread since Utah is the first P5 school to have an eSports team.  Guess not so I'm going to go ahead and start one then.

Maybe chess will be the next sport announced for the Pac-12

While I have been away from this forum for awhile but I have been playing some of the same games that those eSports athletes are playing these days.  I'm baffled at how people are watching eSports these days even though I enjoy some of those games.  It's odd but the media sees value in it.  Hope they notice "JalapenoJon" in the likes of Heroes of The Storm (HoTS), Overwatch, Rocket League, and Paladins.  Maybe I'll get a second job. I just played the Quake Champions beta and I'm just not into those twitch type of games.

Anyone like any of those eSports games out there?  I did play HoTS when it first came out but lost interest shortly after that.  Once HoTS 2.0 went live with those Overwatch characters (HoTS forums on battle.net are pretty toxic due to the cross promotion & OW regulars throwing games since they were only interested in the loot they wanted to collect).  Now I'm addicted to the Blizzard ecosystem and announcing that the PC port of Destiny 2 is going to be on the soon to be former Battle.net, it's not helping awhole lot.

And a dig to CU's "rivals" to the west, perhaps eSports will lead to a reduction in the percentage of online porn users in that state.

I tried to watch someone playing HoTS on Twitch and it wasn't as bad as I thought.  Perhaps if one understands how the game works, it's easier to follow on TV.  There are parts of the world where eSports is pretty popular especially South Korea.  Perhaps they will open some new Korean restaurants for that home cooking for the top Korean eSports athletes.

Here is a list of the Top 100 eSports earners in the Republic of Korea: https://www.esportsearnings.com/countries/kr

Switching gears...17 NBA teams will take part of the first NBA eSports league season: http://www.nba.com/article/2017/05/04/nba-2k-esports-league-17-nba-teams-participate-inaugural-season

I'm wondering how long before Pac-12 schools could do the eSports of the actual sports.  I'm not real convinced that football would be a good eSport but soccer, basketball, and hockey could be good eSports titles.

And Forbes has an article about the issues with eSports and the NCAA: https://www.forbes.com/sites/allabouttherupees/2017/05/19/ten-legal-issues-to-watch-when-it-comes-to-esports/#755d00ca198d

If it was a game I really knew & liked, I'd enjoy watching high-level experts play it ... for about 10 minutes.

I didn't even make it to ten minutes when watching a HoTS match on Twitch.  I'm still quite puzzled by how the media is getting into eSports and even ESPN.com has an eSports section which doesn't appear to be well designed.

If colleges are going to field eSports teams, more power to them.  I think this is basically what the next generation is going to be like and I'm torn about it.

Pac-12 entered eSports this current academic year and I think the Pac-12's focus on Asia is part of the reason why.  It makes sense since sooner than later, Asia is going to make up 60% of the world's population.  That is how forward thinking Larry Scott is and that is what I like about him although like many Pac-12 fans, I'm frustrated with distribution of the P12N.

Edit: P12 terroitory is home to the likes of Riot Games (League of Legends) and Blizzard (HoTS, WoW, StarCraft, Overwatch).

You aren't much different from me when it came to console games because I have no desire to spend that much money and I can always chill with the older systems until I was ready to buy the console that I have wanted.  Then I built my computer in late 2014 and since Feburary, I haven't touched my game consoles at all...must be that once every decade change in my gaming habits.  First decade was on the NES with Mario & Zelda, second decade was Final Fantasy VII & other RPGs, third was Need For Speed Underground on the PS2, and now it looks like MMOs especially MOBAs are my new thing for the next decade.

You don't have to suck your wallet dry to get into PC gaming and those eSports games do not require expensive hardware.  I still have a Pentinum G3220 CPU that is dual core and runs 3.0 GHz and I upgraded my GPU this year with a Nvidia GTX 1050 and can run those eSports in full HD + more than 60 frames per second.  That GPU cost just $109.99 at MicroCenter and is the most expensive computer part in my PC.  The nice thing is that you don't have to pay for online multiplayer with those eSports games while you would have to do that on the XB1/PS4 and maybe the Switch.

eSports isn't limited to the PC as some of those games can be played on the current consoles which can possibly guarantee a level playing field since all the consoles are the same unless they were tampered with.  I'm going to look into what games the P12 schools are going to be playing and cover those in this thread.  Any non eSports games can be put into the Gaming Thread.  School sponsored eSports teams will probably be easier to follow than the likes of Evil Geniuses, Wings Gaming, SK Telecom T1 which were the top earning eSports teams in 2016.  Given that NBA 2K eSports will be kicking off later this year, perhaps eSports will really start to be more visible in the good old US of A.

i was floored when i discovered you could buy old nes, snes, and n64 games on the wii. i may never buy a new system. super mario world for the snes is my favorite game of all time, i still rev that thing up when i'm bored.

i'm currently making my way through the mega man series. i think i'm up to mega man x2, which came out in 1994. i'm... a little behind the times.

MM 7-10 might be on its way: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/mega-man-7-8-9-10-collection-leaked-possibly/1100-6449660/

The Wii was an awesome thing when it come to the eShop.  I think Nintendo is more than capable of having a service like Playstation Now.

Last year, the Pac-12 announced plans to begin esports competitions within the conference but has not followed through, perhaps for the reasons mentioned above. "The Pac-12 is not pursuing esports as a league at this time," wrote Erik Hardenbergh, senior vice president for public affairs at the Pac-12, in an email response to a query about the conference's esports plans. An NCAA spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

Utah will restrict what its esports players can do, at least up to a point.

"They're students first, and we will impose amateurism rules on them," Dimick said. "When you're representing the university -- when you have the school marks across your chest and [are] representing yourself as a Utah player -- then you have to be an amateur."

"We are not gonna self-impose regulations past that," he added. "So when they are not representing themselves as our team player, or as individuals using the school colors or marks to promote themselves, then they are completely free, that's their concern from there."

Looks like Utah will be the test mule in this case.
