Seems more appropriate to wonder how USC is getting such highly rated classes without any track record of success.  Does anyone actually go to their games?

Probably has something to do with Andy Enfield's wife.

Well, he hired two really good recruiters from SoCal. One got popped in the scandal. The other is still around. Their feeder AAU program is now going to be tapped out of talent.

It seems so obvious and dumb considering how major sanctions crushed the football program at USC.  Utah gets popped by the NCAA for nothing, though.

Lots of new faces but I will make a bold prediction that Altman will have the Ducks playing as well as anyone in the conference by mid-February after a slow start.  OK, not a bold prediction at all but lots of talent to work with this winter.

On Sunday, top Canadian (4*) prospect and 6-foot-6 wing Addison Patterson, who recently reclassified into the 2019 recruiting class, committed to Oregon over offers from Arizona State, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Oklahoma, USC and others:

Hearing buzz that Oregon might be the preseason top pick again, which kind of sucks. I could absolutely see a season a lot like last year (preseason favorite, 4 non-con loses, a few terrible conference losses, rollin' by Valentine's Day) and that's not a complaint, I'd take a second weekend NCAA tournament season ANY time. But with only three returning players?? Conference champs seems like a tall order. Though, it could be a matter of "well, who else is it gonna be?"

  • 4 weeks later...

Redshirt freshman Tyger Campbell practiced live last week for the first time, according to sources.

Campbell, the 5-11 point guard, missed all of his true freshman season after suffering an ACL knee injury.

He'll continue to add more live minutes to his practices and potentially be ready to go in time for the start of the season.

Sophomore shooting guard David Singleton is still not practicing, needing more recovery time on the foot he fractured in the Pac-12 Tournament last March. It's uncertain when doctors will clear him completely.

I'd like to apologize in advance for Utah's men's basketball team and the hit your school will take on your RPI.  I think practice started yesterday which means we are one day closer to the season being over.

We're a skiing school anyway.

I like your confidence.

There are nine notable events/contests in November and December that if Pac-teams do well, could change the prevailing opinion that the conference is struggling.  Win a share of these challenging games/tourneys, and the Pac-12 will be seen as back on track.

  • How Arizona State fares in the Air Force Reserve Tipoff where they open with St Johns and if they win, likely face Virginia.
  • What UCLA can do in Hawaii at the Maui Invitational.  If the Bruins beat BYU, Kansas is probably next, and Michigan State may be waiting in the finals.
  • The success that Oregon has in the Battle 4 Atlantis.  If the Ducks get by Seton Hall, North Carolina will probably be waiting, with Gonzaga or Michigan possibly in the finals.
  • Whether Colorado can win at Allen Fieldhouse against Kansas.
  • If Washington can win at home against Gonzaga.
  • If Arizona can win at home against Gonzaga.
  • How Oregon fares when playing at Michigan.
  • Whether UCLA can prevail in the CBS Sports Classic against North Carolina.
  • How Utah fares against Kentucky in Las Vegas.

I can't fathom a reason to omit Oregon State playing Oklahoma and Iowa State here.  Both strong basketball programs, and OSU has their best chance to compete since GPII left.  Tres Tinkle and Ethan Thompson are back, Kylor Kelley is a senior who is a great defensive presence at the rim.  We've got one of the tallest recruiting classes in history coming in, including Payton Dasrtup, a former 4-star recruit who was originally a 2014 BYU commit.

This might also be our oldest roster ever, which is never a bad thing in the NCAA.

The nine notable games selected were chosen because of the national profile of the Pac-12 opponent/potential opponent, not the prowess of the Pac-12 team.  Wins over Virginia, Kansas, Michigan State, Gonzaga, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Michigan would jolt the needle of national perception (and NCAA committee selection).  Wins over other admittedly good teams noted in the tough early schedule (e.g., Dayton, Iowa State, Nevada, Baylor, Notre Dame) would be great, but not earthshaking.

Oklahoma is not a national power in hoops?  They were in the final 4 three years ago, and the Elite 8 the year before that.  They've finished ranked 10 of the past 20 years.
