28-17 Iowa St, half.

Cyclones are methodical as fuck and we couldn’t stop it. Dye fumbled inside our 20 and special teams didn’t know a pooch kick was a live ball apparently, setting ISU up with primo field possession for two scores.

Shough was 3/3 and looked fine on the opening drive, Dye fumbled away our second, Brown came in for the 2nd quarter and led a 98 yard touchdown drive, and then a field goal drive right before half. Shough didn’t actually do anything to lose the job today, but I think he just lost the job? Unless Cristobal is going to pull a Bellotti and alternate QBs by quarter like a madman.

Should the Fiesta Bowl be close?  When you look at the two teams' recruiting, it make you wonder about their coaching.  Composite recruiting rank below:

  • 2015: ISU 64th, OU 16th
  • 2016: ISU 55th, OU 27th
  • 2017: ISU 52nd, OU 19th
  • 2018: ISU 55th, OU 13th
  • 2019: ISU 46th, OU 7th
  • 2020: ISU 46th, OU 11th

Well, Matt Campbell is an excellent coach, so it’s fair to bring coaching into it. He’s worked those recruiting classes into a top 10 team, so kudos to him.

Oregon is the youngest team in FBS. They won the conference in a rebuilding year. Some mistakes have been made along the way, young teams do dumb things sometimes 🤷‍♂️

How embarrassing for all of us that Oregon won the conference. Ouch.

We're embarrassed, but Oregon only deserves 1/12th of that embarrassment.  Perhaps more embarrassing is that eleven Pac-12 teams couldn't outdo a team that is Iowa State's pool boy.

It’s a covid year, it really doesn’t matter.

The national perception matters.  It does.  We can fool ourselves, but the trajectory of a failing Pac-12 is reinforced by this year's sad performance, capped off by the Fiesta Bowl.  It will have a serious impact on upcoming media contract negotiations.

National perception does matter, but nothing that happened this year was going to move the needle one way or the other. Had USC beaten us in the CG, they would have been undefeated... and outside the top 10, behind several 2-loss teams. That’s national perception coded into voters before our season even started. A win over Iowa State wasn’t going to change anything.

But what changed? We were the weakest P5 conference pre-covid, we’ll be the weakest P5 conference post-covid. It was generally believed a 1-loss Oregon would have made the CFP last year. An undefeated Pac-12 team will get into the CFP in 2021, and a 1-loss team will absolutely be in contention. Same as always.
