2015-16 nfl thread

i think we've used the same thread for the last two or three seasons. let's bury it and start fresh.

seattle's training camp begins on friday. while i imagine the RW contract saga will get a lot of coverage, i tend to think that'll get done at some point and won't affect the team. i'm more interested in:

1. michael bennett is upset with the 4-year, $28 million deal he signed aaaaaaall the way back in, uh, 2014. he showed up to the team's mini-camp over the summer, which would lead one to believe he won't sit out training camp, but nfl players do weird things when money is involved.

2. i don't know if darrell bevell hates tight ends, or if russell wilson just doesn't understand they're legal downfield receivers, but together the two do not have a good history of using the TE position to its greater capacity. zach miller was a 60+ reception guy playing with no quarterback in oakland, and he became a glorified extra blocker in seattle. now we have one of, if not the, best TE's in the game after giving up a first and trading away our center for jimmy graham. he can obviously do a lot of things zach miller can't, but let's not pretend miller wasn't an above-average receiver. he was. i'm interested in what kind of packages the coaching staff develops for graham.

3. how healthy is everyone? every single member of the legion of boom was hurt in the super bowl, and both earl thomas and richard sherman (hurt in the NFC championship game) are on record saying they wouldn't have played if it wasn't, y'know, the super bowl. reports are now that thomas will sit out all of camp and may not even be ready by Week 1. jeremy lane, who broke his arm and tore an acl on the same play in the super bowl, will start the season on the PUP list. both sherman and chancellor participated in mini-camp after chosing not avoid off-season surgeries, so that's good, but we'll see how they do against more lively contact. receiver paul richardson, a 2014 second rounder who started to come on late in the season, suffered an acl injury in the divisional round against carolina. likely a PUP candidate to start the season.

4. tyler lockette is the most important rookie on the team, imo. our return game was abysmal last season, and he should help out immediately in that regard. kick offs, punts, let him field everything through the exhibition games and win the job. he was a big-play receiver in college and if he can eventually help out a bit playing offense that's great, but we need a big-time special teams boost. losing golden tate was a boneheaded move last offseason, and far too often our field position sucked because bryan walters couldn't get two yards upfield before getting blasted.

5. oh, and some cohesion on the OL, eh?

Yeah that thread had a long life indeed.

This is the first time that I haven't really paid that much attention to either the NFL or CFB until close to August.  People were ready to send me in for a checkup of the head when I told them I havne't memorized the schedules of either CU or the Broncos at this point.  Will be going to the 49ers-Broncos preseason game as well.

Speaking of the Broncos, I'm wondering how much of Peyton Manning's offensive scheme will be retained along with how much of Gary Kubiak's offensive scheme is actually installed.  The main concern is the OL due to the fact that they will be asked to do more zone blocking and the OL of the last few years might have not been able to do that.  Having Wade Phillips as DC was quite a nice pickup as well.

I wonder how much better the Dolphins can get with Suh in that locker room.

Can Romo's back hold up for the Cowboys?  Will a new payday for Cam Newton result in more wins for Carolina?

Bennett has whined and been a baby, wish we would have drafted his replacement, and traded him for a 2nd round pick.

Wilson hasn't said no to the deal, and he would be a fool to turn it down.

There have been lots of reports the last week or so stating that the Hawks and Wagner are getting close to a deal as well. And if given the choice, I'd take Wags having a deal, and us franchising Wilson.

As for the TE, miller was used to block a lot, then once the line got better, he kept getting hurt. Outside of him, the TE are trash. Now Seattle has a legit threat, and he will be used a ton.

Chancellor has said this is the best he has felt in years, and Sherm is ready to go. Honestly, I think a lot of what you posted was driven by he media just looking for something bad to write about a team that has gone to two stray Super Bowls.

Wow, I'm a big fan of Wilson but that contract looks ridiculous on the surface. I'm sure there's some Kap-like clauses in it that make it more team friendly than it appears but wow. The leverage qbs have when they sign deals is crazy. Basically, if you have an above average qb, you essentially have to pay the guy whatever he wants or be willing to get destroyed by your fans as well as the media.

lot of money for a qb who one can probably successfully argue either side of the "elite" category. i tend to think he's worth it (passer rating, td to turnover ratio, the wins, the clutch play), but really, the writing was on the wall after tannehil and newton's big deals. gotta pay RW more than those guys.

Seattle had no choice whether he is or isn't worth it.  The only other alternative was to let him walk, which would remove the most important position in the game from a team that is built to contend for super bowls over the next several seasons.

I think even if you are convinced he is and will continue to be a top 5 QB in the NFL he overpaid and this will affect the Hawks down the line but the Hawks are in a unique situation.  Screw the future, it was the only play.  Wilson couldn't have had more leverage.

It's technically a 4 year deal, just under 22 a year. But on the books, it's looks like a 5 year deal because of this year, so much more cap friendly.

Been in the hospital due to stubborn pneumonia this week and ESPN hasn't changed much from when I stopped watching them. That Tom Brady stuff was just unbearable to listen to in every 30 min show on ESPN.

I'm ready for a little preseason action.

Turn off ESPN, they suck. You can get NFL news on the NFL network.

I don't know about you guys but I destroy my phone every time I'm at the center of an investigation.

He shouldn't have destroyed his phone, but this whole thing is a cluster fu**.

Let me get this straight. Mike Kensil, who has or still is employed by the Jets, and hates the Patriots with a passion was the one that leaked the information out there that 11 of the balls were under inflated. 5 months go by, and now the Ted Wells report comes out, after the impression has already been left that the Patriots were cheating, even though the Wells report said the opposite. Then you have the NFL leaking information, while the due process is still on going, and helps paint the Patriots guilty in public opinion, so when Goodell issues his bans, he doesn't face public scrutiny.

Furthermore, in 2009, the Jets were guilty of doing the same thing (except they were kicking with deflated balls) and they were just fined. The kicker wasn't punished for it, you know why? He's protected by the CBA -- this is the exact reason why Goodell is trying to force everyone to believe that this is just like PED's, he knows he has no basis. The 2009 infraction is a direct example of why.

I dont mind the Patriots, I certainly dont hate them, but this whole thing is going to end real ugly.

Wags gets the highest contract ever for a MLB. The Panthers can't be happy.

The Seacocks are quickly turning themselves into a destination where Defensive players would love to play. Loud stadium, crowd behind you, and a coaching staff and ownership that relishes defenses more than offenses at times. Reminds me of Tampa in the early 2000's, where everyone wanted to play for Kiffin, and loved the schemes.
