utenation
My obvious choice is Shaw.. Where do you think your coach falls into the pecking order(there's been some rumblings this year)? I think Whittingham is getting more consistent but until we win or even get to a CCG game, I would rank him about 3rd or 4th..
MrBug708
Whittingham was strong pre-PAC-12 but that's getting further and further away. That Colorado loss in the first year was brutal because it was Colorado and cost a visit to the PAC-12 title game. I'd go Shaw, but I think Petersen is probably 1B to Shaw's 1A

I'd go Shaw, but I think Petersen is probably 1B to Shaw's 1A I think KW's first 3 years in the P12 were average at best. I do give him a semi pass transitioning into a better league. His last two years have him climbing.. 5-4 in 2015, 6-3 in 2015, with two ranked seasons overall.. Jury is still out this year. To this point Petersen hasn't done much in the P12. But I'm looking at overall resume. Chris is in my top 3..
All Hail
I think Shaw is the obvious choice for #1 but KW gets my vote for #2. Utah is one of the hardest places in the Pac 12 to recruit to and if you look at who KW gets and what he consistently does with those recruits, it's pretty impressive. He even recycles recruits from other schools that were deemed useless (Clay, Williams, etc) and turns them into very solid players. Let's see if Petersen win a big game at Washington before we anoint him 1B.
Card Tricks
TIER 1.)========== 1. David Shaw 2. Kyle Whittingham (gets the nod over Coach Pete thanks to success amidst heavy staff turnover) 3. Chris Peterson 4. Mark Helfrich TIER 2.)========== 5. Jim Mora 6. Todd Graham 7. Rich Rodriguez TIER 3.)========== 8. Mike Leach 9. Sonny Dykes 10. Mike McIntyre (early returns from 2016 have bumped him up from Tier 4 to Tier 3) TIER 4.)========== 11. Gary Anderson 12. glduck
shaw is the easy #1. duck fans like to complain WHAT HAS PETERSEN DONE AT WASHINGTON TO DESERVE ANY PRAISE but those fans are stupid. he's obviously done a very nice job. he'd get my #2 vote. i'll take whittingham to slide into the third slot. too many flaws with everybody else. PAC MAN
I know Mike MacIntyre's conference record stinks but hey he got SJSU a 10 win season. I know it was the WAC but a 10 win season is nothing to sneeze at. MacIntyre has managed to reduce attrittion and as a result, CU has one of the most experienced squads if not the most experienced PAC-12 squad this season. This conference is turning out to be more competitive than CU's old conference and this will mean even good coaches will lose their jobs at some point just like Les Miles recently. RogueDuck
Not to be negative, but damn the quality of Pac 12 coaches has gone down. In 2009 we had Pete Carroll, Kelly, Harbaugh, Riley and even Dirk Koetter.

Chad Sexington
How is "best" defined? Seems like it would be easy to be the best if a coach has more resources, support and certain intangibles, such as program cache. If it's wins/losses, then that's Shaw. If it's more with less, then it's probably Leach or Whittingham.

Chad Sexington
Leach?? His team has lost to FCS schools two years in a row. Yeah, but he took a moribund program and made competitive. Didn't he win 10 games last year? He's done that with the smallest budget, biggest recruiting hurdles and tepid support. He also did the same at TTech with similar challenges. What were they before or after Leach?

What was Stanford before Harbaugh and Shaw? Stanfords extreme admissions requirements means they can only recruit 5% of the athletes from a given recruiting class. Talk about a massive disadvantage. If they don't land the few kids that are eligible for Stanford each year they are Screwed, which makes Shaws consistency all the more impressive. Shaw checks both boxes, he wins and he does more with less. Damn you for making me defend Stanford
glduck
wazzu did not win 10 games last year. they would have, but he lost to an FCS school. leach has had two "breakthrough" seasons in pullman (2013, 2015) and has followed them both up with stinkers. i'd like to see consecutive winning seasons at least once before a case is made for the upper-division. Orange
GA doesn't yet score an F, but definitely an "Incomplete." I'm waiting for the guy who took Utah State from 4-8 to 11-2.

utenation
Jim Mora has basically won 10 games and taken UCLA to the CCG game twice since 2012.. Finished ranked in the T20 in 2 of the 4 full seasons he's coached. I have: 1. Shaw 2. Petersen- (mostly based on his hype and success at BSU and I believe he is building a winner at UW.) 3. Mora- (head to head record against KW is 3-1) and UCLA was a mess under slick Rick. see numbers above. 4. KW- could be # 3 based on the disadvantages others have pointed out.. but KW needs to take the next step for me to put him higher than 3. 5. Helfrich- already slipped to # 5 but his numbers and a national championship game are holding him here for now. But the further he gets away from MM, the less faith I have in him that he's the real deal. 6. Graham- last year was a joke but he has taken ASU to the CCG and had back to back 10 win seasons in 4 full seasons. 7. Rich Rod- Pretty inconsistent but seems to find a way to beat Utah every year and did get to a NY6 bowl. 8. Leach- Has raised the profile of WSU in his weird kinda way 9. Dykes- Great offense but needs a defense and more consistency. He has raised Cal up though IMO. 10. Mac- This year it seems to be coming together a little after CU has just been horrible. 11- GA- too soon. 12: Helton- too soon and already controversy.
