  1. I don’t know if it’s sustainable but I also don’t know how you go back. I think we’re barreling towards a Power 2 scenario + self-governance and we’ll need to wait till that model is in place before any new rules will stick.

I don’t have any answers. It’s still jarring to me to see an underclassman post an “I’m coming back!” graphic on their socials; my knee jerk reaction is always “well no shit, where else would you go?” until I remember we’re living in a world where you basically have to re-recruit your entire team each year.

  2. I look forward to drafting Donovan Clingan, getting way too excited after a baller rookie year, and then crying softly into my pillow when it’s announced he has to retire from the game within three years because of knee issues.

  3. Illegal screens are like holding or pass interference on a hail mary. You look close enough you can probably find it, especially on replay, but it goes uncalled/missed so often it usually takes a blatant or jarring example to get the call. The sell is what got the call, not the lean or positioning of Edward’s shoulders. I agree it probably meets the technical definition of a foul, but I don’t think that call is made consistently enough in *any* game to blow a whistle in that situation.

I actually loathe the call on principle. So many illegal/moving screens aren’t the post player’s fault, and I hate assessing a foul on a big man 20+ feet from the basket. Call it a turnover and move on. I know that wouldn’t have made a difference last night, UConn still would have lost possession.

  4. I cannot believe they called that on Edwards. Two biggest stars in the game and it’s decided on a screen where Edwards kinda sorta leaned in. Coulda been a classic.

  5. Yeah, I don’t think conference strength has much to do with it once we get to this level. I think there were three clear cut #1’s, and then like 20 teams who could all beat each other on any given night. Hence Carolina going down tonight, too.

  6. On 3/26/2024 at 4:43 PM, HLB said:

For starters, who said that Oregon State wasn't extended and offer?  Maybe Oregon State refused an offer to join the ACC.

To that end, the author of this filing fails to recognize that over history, Cal and Stanford have had more national appeal to the general viewing audience than Oregon State.

But who cares?  The ACC didn't need Cal, Stanford, Oregon State or Washington State.  None of those four were going to impact the ACC's viewership, attendance numbers, and etc.  The ACC didn't need any of those schools.  The ACC simply chose to extend a charitable offer to Cal and Stanford.

This isn’t true. The ACC has known for months that they’re going to lose all their top schools, and needed to bring in reinforcements to pad the conference for when they lose Fla St, Clemson, North Carolina, etc. They absolutely did need to expand, and that’s why they did.

  7. Was Smith expecting WSU to get raided by the Portal? Was this his one shot at cashing in?

Life is about to get more difficult for Stanford, and it hasn’t exactly been rosy the last decade. I might’ve held out for a better gig.

  8. You wouldn’t know it based on yesterday, but I do think Oregon can be pretty good next year, depending on what the portal does to us. There’s no replacing Dante but if this year’s three freshmen all return, plus Bittle (confirmed) and Tracey, that’s a nice little starting five. Wouldn’t argue against adding some bench production.

Of course, I don’t know what “pretty good” will translate to in the B1G.

  9. Yep. I was way off on the speed thing, they look quicker than us. Also dominating us on the offensive glass. Dante is missing bunnies and getting outplayed. Very, very lucky to be only down two, Creighton is getting all the looks they want.

  10. It’s probably a lazy comparison based on them both being big and white, but Creighton reminds me a little of that Iowa team with Luke Garza we beat in the 2nd round a few years ago. Talented, skilled big guy surrounded by four dudes who can shoot. Our speed and athleticism was too much for Iowa, could be too much for Creighton. But we have zero depth, so foul trouble will kill us, and if the Jays are shooting well I dunno if we have the firepower to keep up.
