The Flu

Went on a guided fishing boat trip this past weekend with the family. The guide was telling us his 43 year old brother died from the Corona virus a month ago, and that he had an aunt and uncle who both had it, and that he did not expect his uncle to make it through the day. But, it turns out he is a big Trump supporter, and he proceeded to tell us that he thought that the media was over blowing the pandemic to make Trump look bad. I just don't get it.

Again with what appears to be a dig at teachers from you? What is it? Are they all too uppity for you? To female dominant- ooh, that might be it.

Or is it their very real magnanimity that irks you?

From the article posted in the tweet's retweet mess above. (At least it wasn't a tiktok video, though):

The union’s priorities, Ms. Myart-Cruz said, include ensuring that remote mental health counseling is available to students, and that teachers are reimbursed for work-from-home expenses such as upgrading their internet connections.

What greedy teachers and their bullshit demands, right?

Teachers are no different than any other workers and teacher unions no different than other unions.   Why do people want to paint them as saints?  There’s nothing wrong with teachers unions being consumed with self interest rather than the public good. The hypocrisy of using the children as shields in their battles With school boards gets a little tiresome.  Let’s see if they go on strike Solely for the purpose of getting remote mental health counseling for the kids.

With the exception that you NEVER skip an opportunity to skewer them.  You were a teacher once, weren't you?  Did too many female teachers spurn your advances?  Do they not like it when you call a "pretty girl pretty"?

They aren't treated as saints.  They're consistently assailed with budget cuts for education in every state, and they have an entire political party on their ass, CONSTANTLY, for teaching kids such controversial subjects as evolution and slavery.  Yes, they're threatening a strike if districts open up schools when the government has incorporated ZERO plan to protect teachers -- many of whom are in their 50s or 60s -- from a deadly virus

Oh, I mean, using kids as human shields.

Wait, no, that's the GOP's position:

With respect to academic year or school year 2020-2021, the Secretary of Education may not make funds directly available to an elementary school, secondary school, or institution of higher education under an applicable program unless the school or institution certifies to the Secretary that the school or institution— (1) will begin providing in-person instruction not later than September 8, 2020, and in a manner substantially similar to that provided in previous academic years and school years; and (2) has a detailed plan in place to protect the health of students and personnel.

Magnanimous teachers?  I’ve always loved your sense of humor!

“This spring, when classrooms closed because of the coronavirus, an emergency agreement between the district and union required Miami teachers to interact with their students for a minimum of three hours per day, which could include making phone calls or responding to emails.“

It's a shame that politicizing the virus is literally killing people.  I hope this serves as a warning for people not to behave wrecklessly, especially those in higher risk groups.

It won't.

Too much of our country is just straight-up brainwashed by the right-wing cult.

Right...because nearly the entire state of Oregon teachers walked out for a day last year because of our own self-interest...oh wait, it was because we knew funding was needed to increase mental health services and without pressure the state would continue to wiggle out of it.

Are teachers all saints? No, of course not.  But teachers select a profession that pays less and continually pick up the slack to serve kids that our society continually devalues.  At some point, teachers and public schools won't be able to handle the next ill of society we're asked to solve.
